Business Style Travel

My 1st video on #TSF YouTube Channel is here

14th July 2015

Welcome to the 1st episode of TSF YouTube Channel – the aim is to share with you a few minutes filled with short snippets of information, in the form of tips and useful ideas to be stylish. As you will hear in the recording, I’ll be leaving for Japan in just 2 days so I thought I could talk about #stylish packing – a topic that many of you often ask me about.

How do you pack for various purposes? Should I roll, Should I fold? What to wear when you fly… First of all, I recommend starting with a list. A bit of an old school trick, but it is effective for me to have a checklist where I note all I normally need to make sure the essentials are there.

These include:

  • battery charger
  • extra tights
  • hayfever tablets other medicines
  • nail file
  • plastic bags
  • pad and pen
  • glasses
  • disposable razors
  • handcream

Of course you need to approach this based on the duration of your trip. I’ll give you the example of my imminent Japanese escapade.

This is my trip scenario:

  • hot weather
  • city setting
  • 1 week max
  • mix of leisure (sightseeing) and PR duties (dinners and social events)
  • 1 hand luggage and 1 woman’s purse

And remember:

  1. travel comfy – jeans and sneakers take up space so wear them
  2. fold t-shirts and shorts
  3. wrap delicate fabric items in paper or plastic
  4. put underwear and loose item on the bottom to create a base
  5. wear a jacket so you save space
  6. fill the corners with long items – brush, hair drier, deodorant (I suggest a compact one, to avoid too many liquids at controls)
  7. always pack some nuts
  8. make sure the camera and the valuables are in the hand luggage
  9. pack a pashmina for the plane (and a spray to stay hydrated)
  10. always check voltage and bring adapters
  11. 1 comfortable heel, 2 sandals and 1 pair of trainers

In this case I’ll have a guide, a big DSLR camera with lenses and a few books on my kindle to read on the plane, along with my Bose headphones – ideal both for work in the booth and long-haul flights.

And you?

Any highlights for your bag? Any change or improvement? Share!

Coming up: on Thursday, check my photo gallery on France and Portugal, and more on packing.

In my experience, long-haul flights can be a nightmare with jeans on. I would go for leggings –less stylish maybe, but more comfy. I am a wrapping fan, especially for shirts and skirts, which otherwise crease a lot. I also pack a fabric bag for the laundry (it tends to smell less –sorry for the tmi there). For hot weather, I prefer shift dresses –easy to wash in the evening and ready to wear on the next morning. And I always pack the heaviest things at the bottom of the standing suitcase, so it helps balance.
I loved to read this. It is fun to know how other people go through these things. Also… you got this topic the same day as Garance Doré, which I found quite funny.

      Oh thanks, Itziar ;p
I like the idea of a fabric bag – clever! And I love Garance! I hadn’t noticed she posted on the topic… must be that ‘great minds’ adagio, right? 🙂 Thanks for watching/reading/commenting!

      Me too!

I wear cashmere sweats or ponte pull on pants on the plane, with a cashmere throw. I like to look neat but be comfy too. 🙂

Also can recommend the shift dresses. So stylish and basically effortless. Uniqlo has good and affordable alternatives.

Hi Val! Nice scenery, by the way. Where did you film this?
Regarding packing, this is how I pretty much approach it too. Having a list is crucial. I usually write mine way in advance just to make sure I don’t forget anything. Extra tights are a must in my case as well 🙂 I normally roll clothes so they wrinkle less and take up less space too.
Thanks for the tip about delicate fabrics, I’ll definitely keep it in mind (I usually wrap them in other clothes, but a bag may be a better ides).

It was in Sao Rafael Atlantico, in Albufeira. I highly recommended this resort in Portugal, it was a great stay. And yes, rolling can help, depending on which item (mainly it’s tees and tops for me).
      Thanks Alina for watching/reading/commenting!

I agree re: jeans. They’re a nightmare on the plane!

I always wear cashmere sweats or a pair of pull on ponte pants, a nice shirt, and a cashmere throw just to look stylish (and be warm on the plane because it’s always cold). I hate looking messy, and I am pretty fastidious about how I dress. Just my 2 cents!

    (and how cool–Japan!)

Hello, Valery! Thank you for sharing your travelling tips that are quite useful. I loved to read them and I will note one of taking a pashmina on board with me for my future voyages ))
I agree with Itziar that a long-haul flight in jeans could turn into a total nightmare ( I once travelled from Europe to Australia and back and I wore jeans. Next time I would prefer to wear clothes made of much softer fabrics than what jeans are made of :))
Having a list is a must for me, otherwise I tend to forget something!
However, I have a personal tip to add if you have to register your luggage: I always use a stick tape to secure all the caps of the bottles containing liquids. Moreover, I wrap them in plastic bags to be on the safe side in case a cap might be somehow removed and spoil my clothes or other things in the luggage. Once I had such an accident with a bottle of tan oil which by pure chance I had put in a plastic bag while packing (do not even know why, never had that habit before).
